Marshfield Standouts Finalize College Plans
MHS Softball Preview 2008 - Floyd Montiel is entering his third year as coach of the Marshfield Pirates softball team. Longtime jayvee coach Jenny Howland moves up to his assistant spot after Bruce Bryant moved into the administrative offices at the high school in Coos Bay this school year. Diana Spillman and Bill Otton will coach the JV team. The Pirates return two-year starting pitcher Brittany Young. The junior has solid support behind the plate in senior Taylor Scott. Stacy Smith will back up Scott, but most likely see more action at First Base. First Team All-Midwestern League infielder Brianna George will be solid at Short Stop. Another First Team selection, Jayla Tavernier, will move from the outfield to Third Base. Montiel will carry eleven-players on the varsity and 15 on the JV team. He says his pitcher Young didn’t play basketball this winter, but has been throwing since November and adds she is faster. Kayla Lyche is her back-up. Other varsity players include Chelsea Burns, Tiffany Wiley, Jessica Ott, Anne Hoekman and Natalie Caffey. Churchill is the league favorite, followed by Thurston and North Eugene . The Pirates play their home games at Coos Head Field, just north of the ESD offices off Teakwood. The JV team plays their games at Mingus Park .
Welcome Pirate fans,
I would like to personally thank you for supporting Pirate Athletics. It is our desire, as Boosters, to encourage our young student-athletes by giving them strong community support. This will develop a stong sense of satisfaction for each of them to compete at the highest level possible. Again, thank you.
